Since 1998, the Inside Books Project, a community volunteer organization, has been the only one of its kind in Texas, a books-to-prisoners program working to promote literacy and education among inmates incarcerated in Texas prisons. The program works like this: inmates mail in written requests for books and other resources and in return, community volunteers select books, write responses and package the materials to send back. The books then become the personal property of the inmate.
Inside Books now have a specific need for books covering all topics in the LGBT scope. While the program has succeeded for well over a decade, they continue to encourage community involvement. The program is completely powered by the community’s donations and volunteer time. If you’re interested in volunteering or you have a few LGBT books sitting around and would like to know more about how you can contribute, you can learn more here.
