East Texas and statewide LGBTQ organizations are coordinating a community gathering on Wednesday, February 4, at 5 p.m. to honor the memory of Ty “Nunee” Underwood, a transgender woman who was murdered in Tyler on January 26.  Ms. Underwood was a native of Lufkin, where her funeral service was conducted Saturday. There have been no arrests in the case, although the Tyler Police Department continues to seek information about the death of Underwood, a 24-year old nursing student who worked in Tyler.  Sources indicate the murder is not currently categorized by law enforcement as a “hate crime”.  Ms. Underwood was the second transgender woman of color to fall victim in the first month of 2015; since her death, two others have been murdered in the U.S.

Brief remarks at the ceremony on Wednesday will be made by members of Ms. Underwood’s family and leaders of several local and state organizations representing the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning community, and straight allies.  Among those gathering to honor her memory and encourage justice on her behalf are Equality Texas, Transgender Education Network of Texas, Hope for Peace & Justice, Project TAG (Tyler Area Gays), Tyler-East Texas PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), Longview PFLAG, Tyler Transgender Group, Tyler Junior College S.A.F.E. (Students Advocating for Equality), UT-Tyler GSSA (Gay Straight Sexuality Alliance), Life Covenant Church of Tyler, and Woodland Christian Church of Longview.
