Picking up at a point in life where Sesame Street leaves off, the hit Broadway (now Off Broadway) musical Avenue Q is delighting adults of all ages. Apart from Jeff Dunham, never before has innocent looking puppets dealt with such adult issues, mainly the transition from the carefree world of Sesame Street to the harsh realities of the real world. Then again, never before have these issues been presented in such a hilarious, irreverent manner either.
Avenue Q was developed by Robert Lopez (The Book of Mormon)and Jeff Marx, and premiered Off Broadway in 2003. It opened at the John Golden Theatre on Broadway later in the year and quickly won three Tonys. The plot of Avenue Q centers on recent college graduate, Princeton, and his struggles to find his place in the world. After finding a cheap apartment on Avenue Q, he meets his wacky neighbors: Teacher’s assistant Kate Monster; struggling comedian Brian and his Asian therapist fiancee, Christmas Day; slacker Nicky and his Republican banker roomate, Rod; internet junkie Trekkie Monster; retired child actor, Gary Coleman; and the incorrigible Bad Idea Bears. None are happy with their lot in life and have put aside their dreams in favor of complacency. Princeton develops feelings for Kate (and Rod for Nicky) but insecurities and fears stop them. Will the residents of Avenue Q reach for the stars, or continue to watch cable TV in the gutter?
